Summer in Dallas

Dallas is not in the middle of a desert, contrary to some perceptions. The North Texas prairie rolls a bit, and several river branches and large creeks cut shallow forested valleys into the expanse of grasslands. The climate is variable, with several hard freezes and occasional snow and ice every winter and 15 days of temperatures above 100 F in a typical summer. Autumn tends to be brief because the summer heat persists well into late September, but there is a definite "turning of the leaves" which can be dramatic. And then there is spring. Plenty of rain, including some very stormy periods, and a large variety of native and adapted foliage which produce a great color show most years. Here are some images of Dallas color throughout the seasons.

Cantonese opera - 六國大封相

Cantonese opera is one of the major categories in Chinese opera, originating in southern China's Cantonese culture. It is popular in Guangdong, Guangxi, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore and Malaysia. Like all versions of Chinese opera, it is a traditional Chinese art form, involving music, singing, martial arts, acrobatics, and acting.
I love 六國大封相. It's one of my favourites cantonese operas!
This is suppoosed to be the bonus show for the opening night of the gig. It serves 3 functions. One, this is a happy program when a poor schoalr finally convinced the head of six states to hire him as the prime minister to fight against Qi. Two, it is said to bring good luck for the troupe. Three, give everyone a chance to gain some stage experience. There is a lot of stylized postures amd gestures singing is not required. As such, very little music.

It's strawberry season!

It's strawberry season! And there are so many varieties to choose from... and the prices are great too. But some are more flavorful than others - and some are outright bland. Last week Tom Thumb Market had these fresh strawberries- 4-lb for $4/big basket. Those are the best priced ones, and the ones I see most at the markets around town. They are large and sweet.

Highland Village policemen

I would like to say thank you to all Highland Village policemen as they really do their duty and take good care of this community.

When we came back from California on 05/20/08, we wondered why a telephone book was lay on outside of our side back door instead of front door. Finally we found a notes from a police which states he moved the phone book for us since we had filed a vacation watch and he did not want anyone know we were not at home.

And tonight, after we took a walk and left the front door and windows open for some fresh air about 10 mins, two policemen came to the door and make sure if we are fine.
